Creating Newcastle's Civic Precinct: A History Walking Tour

Sun 27 Oct & Sun 3 Nov
2pm
1.5 hrs

Join a guided history walking tour of the Civic area of 1.5 km over 1 1/2 hours to learn the story, discuss, see some interesting old photos, and perhaps be surprised at some stories and some sites.  The walk starts and finishes at Newcastle Museum, and ventures to Darby Street, Auckland Street, Civic Park, and Laman Street.  It is suitable for locals and old-timers, city newcomers, visitors and for all ages.

In the central part of Newcastle's CBD, the Civic Precinct contains a cluster of buildings, uses, and open spaces that define a theme of citizenship, symbolic social order, and civilised ceremonial gathering.  But how did this really happen?  How was a rather undistinguished sprawl of commercial buildings at the western end of the CBD at the end of the 19th century, and industrial uses, transformed into cherished public space and what we see today?
