Making waves: the science of light

Speaker: Dr John Holdsworth
School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, University of Newcastle

Dr Holdsworth is a specialist in photonics – the science and application of light. Following the National Science Week theme, he will outline the physical properties of light and how they are used in everyday life – including optical fibres for telecommunications, lasers for biomedical applications and LIDAR (light detecting and ranging) for imaging dust plumes.

The Newcastle Time Walk

A stroll back through 300 million years

Be a field geologist for a morning! Rocks of the spectacular Newcastle coastline tell us much about how climates and landscapes have evolved over time. Geologists will lead a slow-paced 3km walk along Newcastle foreshore, from Nobbys Head to the Bogey Hole, looking at many features including ancient volcanic rocks, coal seams and remnants of fossil forests. Come along and learn how to be an Earth detective!
