FIRE!

Thursday 19 March - Sunday 6 September 2020

“Fire!” has always been a terrifying shout in Australia, but this year has been extraordinary.

The 2019/2020 bushfire crisis has directly affected more than half of all Australians this summer with a greater intensity than ever before.

Newcastle and the Hunter have seen destruction by both bushfires and city fires throughout our recorded history.

Local historians, Greg and Sylvia Ray, hold an extensive collection of early twentieth century newspaper photographs of fires. They have curated this series of images to show the breadth of impact and the human face of fire in our region from the 1930s to the 1960s.
